U.S. Red Meat Exports Post Gains Through February

Through the first two months of the year U.S. red meat exports posted gains in volume and value. U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports continued an upward trend, increasing 3 percent in volume to 215,787 metric tons (mt) and 14 percent in value to $500 million compared to last year. U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports gained ground, increasing 17 percent in volume to 102,177 mt and 15 percent in value to $316 million.

U.S. pork exports to Asian markets like Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong showed great progress while exports to Mexico, a traditionally strong market, declined slightly. Japan currently is the No. 1 market for pork as exports increased 25 percent in volume to 62,404 mt and 25 percent in value to $190.2 million.

USMEF has conducted many U.S. pork activities in the market this year, including a U.S. pork handbook that features recipes created by a popular host of a Japanese cooking show and hands-on classes showing consumers how to cook with U.S. pork. USMEF will also promote U.S. pork in a few weeks at the high-profile Indy 300 racing event in Tokyo. Spring U.S. pork promotions are being kicked off to also boost sales.

U.S. beef exports to Mexico and the Middle East stayed strong through February and exports to Japan continue to rebound since the market reopening last July. Mexico remained the top market for U.S. beef and beef variety meat as exports increased 5 percent in volume to 53,744 mt and 1 percent in value to $176.3 million in the first two months. Popular consumer promotions like Mother’s Day that follow will help increase retail sales while USMEF seminars to chefs and restaurant managers encourage greater utilization of U.S. beef at the foodservice level.
