The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) joined with other U.S. organizations to educate Mexican food and beverage managers, chefs and restaurants owners enthusiastic to learn about U.S. food items.

USMEF, U.S. Dairy Export Council, U.S.A. Poultry and Eggs Council and the California Wines Institute organized and sponsored an American Interactive Seminar at the Marquis Hotel May 30 in Mexico City. Educational brochures, videos and manuals focusing on U.S. food organizations and products were distributed during the seminar.

“The seminar was a great way to promote U.S. meat products in combination with other U.S. products in Mexico,” said Gilberto Lozano, USMEF Mexico director.

While each organization had time in the spotlight to discuss the qualities and attributes of its products and services, the seminar also demonstrated how U.S. foods can complement one another on the table and in terms of promotional opportunities.

USMEF Chef Salvador Sevilla noted U.S. pork has 31 percent less fat than 20 years ago and is rich in protein, iron and zinc. He also pointed out that cysticercosis and trichinosis have been eradicated from pigs in American farms making the meat very safe. Sevilla also talked about the highly successful “El Cerdo es Bueno” promotion, which aims to create a positive perception about U.S. pork in the mind of Mexican consumers.

In addition, Sevilla spoke about the quality and characteristics of U.S. beef and its affordable cost in the marketplace.

The purpose of the seminar was for key players in the export industry to work together to generate positive awareness of and excitement about U.S. products among these Mexican retail and restaurant sector representatives.

“Participating in the seminar was a way for USMEF, along with our partners, to share information and create an event of excellent quality that positions U.S. products positively in the mind of hotel and restaurant people,” said Lozano.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation is the trade association responsible for developing international markets for the U.S. red meat industry and is funded by USDA, exporting companies, and the beef, pork, lamb, corn, sorghum and soybean checkoff programs.
