Suggested Lead: The European Union has become one of the largest importers of beef in the world since animal disease outbreaks and agricultural policy changes have resulted in a long-term declining trend in beef production.

Jackie Hruby (RU-BEE), director of the European region for the U.S. Meat Export Federation says the beef deficit in the EU means more opportunities for U.S. beef producers.

Hruby says more U.S. beef production plants are applying for permits to export to the EU.

There is room for the U.S. beef industry to gain ground in the EU, but only if suppliers are willing to ban the use of hormones and follow export guidelines set by the EU.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation is the trade association responsible for developing international markets for the U.S. red meat industry and is funded by USDA, exporting companies, and the beef, pork, corn, sorghum and soybean checkoff programs.
