Suggested Lead: Livestock and meat industry representatives met in Mexico earlier this month for the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) annual Strategic Marketing and Planning Conference. Rich Degner, executive director of the Iowa Pork Producers Association, was there. He says one purpose for being there was to get everyone on the same page – especially for pork producers who increasingly see the export market as one that impacts their future.

According to Degner, pork producers from his state who attended the Mexico meeting had a chance to see how a foreign country markets their products.

Mexico is the largest U.S. pork export market by volume, while Japan remains the leading export market by value. Degner says being able to see what is done with U.S. pork variety meat in Mexico brings some of the export message home to producers.

According to Degner, being effective exporters is all a matter of teamwork.

More than 250 individuals affiliated with USMEF attended the Strategic Marketing and Planning Conference in Cancun Nov. 1-3.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation is the trade association responsible for developing international markets for the U.S. red meat industry and is funded by USDA, exporting companies, and the beef, pork, lamb, corn, sorghum and soybean checkoff programs.
