Suggested Lead: Animal diseases, market access, and the current situation of U.S. beef exports were all topics of discussion during U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) Chairman John Bellinger’s address at the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association 129th Annual Convention taking place in San Antonio this past week.

Bellinger says foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) could hit U.S. beef exports harder than BSE has.

Animal identification for cattle in the United States was also discussed.

U.S. cattle raisers understand the value of beef exports.

Bellinger discusses current challenges for U.S. beef exports.

Although U.S. beef exports face challenges, there are also endless opportunities, says Bellinger.

Bellinger says USMEF is essential to overcome challenges and further opportunities in U.S. beef export markets.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation is the trade association responsible for developing international markets for the U.S. red meat industry and is funded by USDA, exporting companies, and the beef, pork, lamb, corn, sorghum and soybean checkoff programs.
