Suggested Lead: Last year U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports hit a record volume of more than 1 million metric tons and a record value of $2.23 billion. The first four months of this year show increases of 16 percent in volume and 29 percent in value over the same period last year.

U.S. Meat Export Federation Chairman Alan Smith sees the increasing demand for U.S. pork in Japan, Mexico, Canada and other markets as a continued call for USMEF activities worldwide.

Smith says different U.S. industries coming together under the USMEF umbrella create a combined effort to increase demand for red meat products worldwide.

USMEF stays active in markets closed to U.S. beef by supplying BSE educational materials to consumers, aiding in reopening efforts and providing U.S. beef samples and information at global food shows.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation is the trade association responsible for developing international markets for the U.S. red meat industry and is funded by USDA, exporting companies, and the beef, pork, corn, sorghum and soybean checkoff programs.
