Market for U.S. Meat in Russia Primed for Takeoff: Part II

Published: Nov 22, 2006

This week’s trade agreement between the U.S. and Russia looks to be a winner for U.S. agriculture – especially those in the red meat segment.  U.S. Meat Export Federation President and CEO Phil Seng says having Russia as part of the international community will encourage them to take a more global and stable view of the world market.

Getting the Russian market open was a long process – and wasn’t always because of international conflict.

According to Seng, one of key steps that will be taken by USMEF is giving U.S. producers and meat exporters more encouragement on the Russian market.

Seng says timing is critical.

Seng says when the market is officially opened to beef, Russia will accept both boneless and bone-in product from cattle under 30 months of age.  Protocols that allow increased U.S. pork imports will also be introduced.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation is the trade association responsible for developing international markets for the U.S. red meat industry.  It is funded by USDA, exporting companies, and the beef, pork, lamb, corn, sorghum and soybean checkoff programs.
