Audio: FMD Not Major Factor in Beef Export Surge to Korea

Published: Mar 18, 2011
When the January 2011 beef exports results were released last week,
South Korea was once again one of the fast-growing markets. U.S. beef
exports to Korea totaled nearly 12,000 metric tons valued at $49.2 -
an increase of more than 60 percent in volume and 80 percent in value
over a year ago. But contrary to many reports in the international media,
the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) situation in South Korea is really not a
major factor in the recent surge of U.S. beef exports. In the attached audio
report, the U.S. Meat Export Federation’s (USMEF) Korea Director Jihae Yang
explains that the upward trend in export activity is due to a sharp increase in
consumer demand, which had gained momentum well before the November
2010 FMD outbreak.
