U.S. Red Meat Exports Increase In January

Statistics for the first month of 2007 show a high increase in U.S. pork exports and gradual growth for U.S. beef exports.

U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports increased 13 percent in volume to 114,879 metric tons (mt) and 20 percent in value to $260.9 million compared to the same month last year.

“Looking at historical trends, monthly pork exports should continue to increase, at least through the first quarter,” said Erin Daley, USMEF manager, research and analysis. “January pork exports to Japan were the highest monthly total volume since April 2005 and accounted for 40 percent of the monthly total pork value.”

Japan led all markets as the United States exported 34,484 mt of pork and pork variety meat valued at $103.6 million. The export volume increased 37 percent and value went up 31 percent compared to the same month last year.

Other markets that experienced strong gains were South Korea as volume went up 33 percent to 12,373 mt and value 51 percent to $28.5 million and China/Hong Kong where volume increased 31 percent to 11,236 mt and value 60 percent to $16.1 million compared to January 2006.

U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports worldwide increased 7 percent in volume to 51,344 mt and 2 percent in value to $158.4 million.

“This is the highest January volume and value totals since the BSE discovery in 2003,” said Daley. “U.S. beef exports have recovered 50 percent of volume and 60 percent of value from January 2003, when the United States last had full access to markets.”

Although total U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports in January were not as strong as in December 2006, there was maintained growth in Japan and the Middle East, where exports to increased 39 percent in volume over last January to 8,633 mt valued at $8.9 million.

Although still the top market for U.S. beef and beef variety meat, exports to Mexico were off 10 percent in volume at 26,279 mt and 17 percent in value at $85 million.
