U.S. Red Meat Exports Gain Through March

According to USDA statistics through March, U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports worldwide increased 10 percent in value compared to the same period last year, to $759.6 million, while U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports increased 14 percent in volume and value at 153,182 metric tons (mt) and $486.6 million.

The rebound in U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports to Japan was driving the increase in total value, with a 22 percent increase over the first three months of last year to $296.4 million and an 18 percent increase in volume to 95,248 mt. USMEF has aggressively promoted U.S. pork as a daily menu item in Japan, producing recipe cookbooks, holding hands-on cooking classes and providing samples at popular events such as the Indy 300 race held a few weeks ago in Tokyo.

South Korea was the third-largest market with a 25 percent gain in value to $82.1 million and a 6 percent increase in volume to 35,051 mt. USMEF activities are drawing South Korean consumer attention to chilled U.S. pork in supermarkets. U.S. pork is less expensive than domestic product, but consumers that try U.S. pork become loyal customers due to its high quality and pleasing taste.

A 19 percent volume increase in U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports to Canada during the first three months of this year more than offset the unchanged volume of 80,222 mt to Mexico, the No. 1 market for U.S. beef.

U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports to Japan continue to hover at 2,500 mt per month. Through March, export volume was 7,975 mt while value was $38.6 million. USMEF activities under the “We Care” campaign continue at supermarkets and restaurants to increase consumer confidence in U.S. beef. Another factor that should have a positive impact on beef volume into Japan is auditors are to complete their review of U.S. plants by the end of May, setting the stage for the end of 100 percent testing of all beef products landed.

U.S. beef muscle-meat exports to the European Union were impressive, with one of the largest monthly shipments within the last 6 years. Through March, volume increased 53 percent to 919 mt and 29 percent in value to $4.2 million.

The Middle East continues to be an exceptional market for U.S. beef variety meat and a growing market for U.S. beef as combined exports increased 48 percent compared to the first quarter last year to 22,985 mt.
