U.S. Pork And Beef Exports Climb In Volume And Value Through July

U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports through the first seven months of this year increased 10 percent in volume to 739,961 metric tons (mt) and 4 percent in value to $1.6 billion compared to the same time period last year.

Mexico is the No. 1 market for U.S. pork through July with volume increasing 20 percent to 217,795 mt and value increasing 17 percent to $323 million. South Korea continues to be a strong market as volume increased 57 percent to 63,226 mt and value went up 37 percent to $128.3 million. High prices of domestic pork in Korea have encouraged consumers to give U.S. pork a try.

U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports through July increased 37 percent in volume to 354,863 mt and 49 percent in value to $1.1 billion compared to the first seven months of last year.

Mexico also remains the top export market for U.S. beef as volume increased 34 percent to 207,353 mt and value increased 37 percent to $664.4 million. U.S. beef export volumes to Taiwan (10,577 mt) and the Caribbean (8,771 mt) were higher than most monthly 2002 and 2003 volumes. These amounts are impressive when considering the limited market access compared to 2003.

A detailed breakdown of July 2006 pork and beef export figures is available on the USMEF Web site.
