U.S. Meat Export Statistics Through September Remain Positive
Export statistics through September released today (Nov. 9) show continued increases in volume and value for U.S. pork and beef.
U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports increased 9 percent in volume to 925,244 metric tons (mt) and 5 percent in value to $2.06 billion over the same period last year. Partially due to market re-openings, U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports show a more dramatic increase as volume rose 41 percent to 469,170 mt and value 55 percent to $1.46 billion.
Mexico continues to be the No. 1 market for U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports in volume, which increased 14 percent to 272,085 mt while value rose 13 percent to $416.6 million over the same period last year. The USMEF Seventh Annual Chef Competition along with successful USMEF retail promotions and community education efforts have helped keep U.S. pork a popular meat choice.
Growth areas include South Korea where USMEF continues to educate consumers of the value of U.S. chilled pork compared to the higher-priced domestic product. Through September, U.S. pork and pork variety meat totals to South Korea climbed 51 percent in volume to 76,910 mt and 40 percent in value to $158 million. Hong Kong also increased 163 percent in volume to 16,300 mt and 147 percent in value to $27 million compared to the same time last year.
For U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports, the reopening of the Japan market and gradual recovery of the Taiwan market coupled with strong demand in Mexico and the Middle East are pushing exports up.
U.S. beef and beef variety meat to Japan totaled 6,801 mt in volume and $35 million in value while Taiwan increased 94 percent in volume to 14,750 mt and 68 percent in value to $69.7 million compared to the same time period last year.
Mexico is the top market for U.S. beef and beef variety meat through September with volume rising 37 percent to 271,452 mt and value 42 percent to $866 million compared to last year.
The Middle East continues to be a strong contender as volume went up 245 percent to 60,847 mt and value 101 percent to $83.3 million. USMEF promotions of U.S. beef livers and also high quality muscle cuts are helping increase this growth. USMEF has also worked hard to gain media attention to U.S. beef, resulting in increased coverage in popular magazines.
