U.S. Beef Exports Up 68 Percent Over 2004
Mexico was the No. 1 market for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports in the first eight months of 2005. U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico totaled 179,850 metric tons (mt), a 75 percent increase on the first seven months of 2004 due to the closing of the market in the beginning of that year and the restrictions on what products can be exported. The value of U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico climbed 86 percent to $555.1 million. Canada was the second largest destination for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports (26,923 mt; $113.8 million), just ahead of the European Union (23,544 mt; $23.5 million).
According to the USDA, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-Aug. 2005 totaled 301,026 mt compared to 179,713 mt in the first eight months of 2004 (a 68 percent increase) and 866,720 mt in Jan.-Aug. 2003. The value of exports rose 96 percent from $435.1 million to $853.2 million ($2.55 billion in Jan-Aug. 2003).

U.S. Pork Exports Up 19 Percent In Volume, 26 Percent In Value
U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 19 percent higher in volume (761,320 mt) in the first eight months of 2005 compared to Jan.-Aug. 2004 and 26 percent higher in value at $1.75 billion. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 16 percent higher in volume (243,825 mt) and 14 percent higher in value ($754.1 million). Mexico was the No. 2 market with a 1 percent decrease in volume to 211,379 mt and a 1 percent increase in value to $323.2 million.
