U.S. Beef Exports Increase 6 Percent In Volume and 21 Percent In Value

According to just-released USDA figures, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-August 2003 were 6 percent higher in volume (868,149 mt) and 21 percent higher in value ($2.551 billion) compared to the first eight months of 2002. U.S. beef muscle exports were 7 percent higher in volume (586,141 mt) than Jan.-August 2002 and 23 percent higher in value ($2.091 billion).

U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Japan for Jan.-August 2003 were 12 percent higher in volume (253,504 mt) and 34 percent higher in value ($911.2 million). U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Korea, the third largest market, for Jan.-August 2003 were 8 percent higher in volume (170,915 mt) and 29 percent higher in value ($555.5 million).

U.S. Pork Exports Increase Slightly in Value

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were very slightly higher in volume (488,119 mt) for Jan.-August 2003 compared to the first eight months of 2002, and 1 percent higher in value at $1,033.5 billion. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 3 percent higher in volume (195,788 mt) and 5 percent lower in value ($563.6 million) compared to the first eight months of 2002.
