U.S.  Beef Exports Increase 20 Percent In Value In First Seven Months Of 2003

According to just-released USDA figures, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-July 2003 were 6 percent higher in volume (753,864 mt) and 20 percent higher in value ($2.2 billion) compared to the first seven months of 2002. U.S.beef muscle exports were 7 percent higher in volume (508,830 mt) than Jan.-July 2002 exports and 23 percent higher in value ($1.806 billion).

U.S. beef muscle exports to Japanfor Jan.-July 2003 were 23 percent higher in volume (176,656 mt) and 45 percent higher in value ($672.2 million) compared to the same period of 2002.

U.S.   Pork Exports Maintain Pace Of Last Year

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were unchanged in tonnage (428,678 mt) for Jan.-July 2003 compared to the first seven months of 2002, but increased slightly (1 percent) in value to $909.2 million. Exports to the No. 1 market, Japan, increased 5 percent in volume to 178,132 mt but dropped 4 percent in value to $507.1 million).

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to South Korea continued to climb dramatically in the first seven months — 64 percent higher in volume (18,425 mt) and 158 percent higher in value ($49.0 million) compared to 2002.
