U.S. Beef Exports Increase 17 Percent In
Value For First Half Of 2003
According to just-released USDA figures, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-June 2003 were 5 percent higher in volume (630,776 mt) and 17 percent higher in value ($1.825 billion) when compared to the first half of 2002. U.S. beef muscle exports for the first half of 2003 were 7 percent higher in volume (426,884 mt) than Jan.-June 2002 exports and 22 percent higher in value ($1.501 billion).
U.S. beef muscle exports to Japan for Jan.-June 2003 were 25 percent higher in volume (150,166 mt) and 47 percent higher in value ($565.7 million) than in those same months of 2002.
U.S. Pork Exports Increase Slightly in Volume,
Maintain Value
U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 1 percent higher in volume (366,214 mt) for Jan.-June 2003 compared to the first half of 2002, and remained steady in value for that period at $769.0 million. Japan remained the top U.S. pork export market with over three times the value ($427.8 million) of the number two market, Mexico ($123.4 million). U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan for the first half of 2003 were 6 percent higher in volume (153,164 mt) and 5 percent lower in value ($427.9 million) when compared to the first half of 2002.
U.S. pork exports to South Korea continued to climb dramatically in the first half of 2003; U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to South Korea for Jan.-June 2003 were 75 percent higher in volume (16,542 mt) and 172 percent higher in value ($42.8 million).
