Mexico Remains Top Destination For U.S. Pork And Beef Exports Through June

U.S. pork and beef exports to Mexico continue to increase through June, making the country the top destination for U.S. red meat exports. USMEF trade activities such as U.S. product seminars with restaurateurs and consumer events such as the Mystery Shopper program along with seasonal purchases helped fuel the increases.

U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports to Mexico through June increased 38 percent in volume to 179,739 metric tons (mt) and 37 percent in value to $564.3 million compared to the same period last year. U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports followed that same trend, increasing 20 percent in volume to 185,587 mt and 16 percent in value to $273.9 million.

U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports to South Korea continue upward, increasing 52 percent in volume to 54,188 mt and 31 percent in value to $109.4 million. USMEF is conducting summer promotions in retail stores to increase purchases of U.S. pork, positioning it as an affordable alternative compared to the highly-priced domestic product.

Worldwide, U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports increased 12 percent in volume to 645,335 mt and 5 percent in value to $1.4 billion.

U.S. beef variety meat exports to the Middle East increased 494 percent in volume to 37,995 mt and 196 percent in value to $55.4 million. Exports of U.S. beef and beef variety meat to Egypt through the first six months of this year climbed to 34,225 mt, eclipsing the 30,915 mt exported the entire year in 2003. USMEF promotions with leading hotels and restaurants have helped increase the popularity of U.S. beef liver cutlets.

Worldwide, U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports increased 39 percent in volume to 307,497 mt and 50 percent in value to $947.4 million.
