Mexico Is Top Destination For U.S. Pork And Beef Exports Through May

Just as USMEF activities like a Mother’s Day celebration and the children’s Jetix Cup soccer tournament increased excitement of consumers in Mexico, U.S. pork and beef exports to Mexico show increases through May, making the country the top destination for U.S. red meat exports.

U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports through the first five months of this year increased 40 percent in volume to 145,082 metric tons (mt) and 43 percent in value to $461.6 million compared to the same period last year. U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports followed that same trend, increasing 21 percent in volume to 156,638 mt and 14 percent in value to $227.2 million.

U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports to South Korea continue to stand out, increasing 52 percent in volume to 47,973 mt and 30 percent in value to $96.7 million. USMEF has focused on expanding this market with several summer U.S. pork promotions in retail stores. U.S. pork is an affordable high quality alternative for Korean consumers compared to the highly-priced domestic product.

U.S. beef  and beef variety meat exports to the Middle East continue to surge, increasing 650 percent in volume to 29,425 mt and 250 percent in value to $45.4 million. USMEF has held several promotions to help boost sales and popularity of U.S. beef liver cutlets in Egypt. USMEF combined with Colorado State University to present research that helped in May extend Egypt’s shelf life requirements of U.S. beef kidneys, hearts and livers.
