Jan.-May Pork Numbers Show
4 Percent Decline Worldwide
Exports of U.S. pork muscle cuts for January-May, 2002 were six percent lower in volume (223,776 mt) and six percent lower in value ($571 million) compared to the same period in 2001. Small declines in the volume of exports to Japan (down 2 percent to 114,470 mt) and Mexico (down 3 percent to 46,675 mt) were partially offset by significant increases to Canada (up 9 percent to 29,459 mt), South Korea (up 77 percent to 7,041 mt), and China/Hong Kong (up 6 percent to 5,771 mt).
Exports of U.S. pork variety meats fell 1 percent compared to last January-May to 72,732 mt. The leading market, Mexico, bought 31 percent more U.S. pork variety meats (42,333 mt) and exports to China/Hong Kong fell 15 percent to 14,526 mt. Sales to Russia were hard hit by competition from cheaper Brazilian product and fell 83 percent to 791 mt.
