Halfway Through The Year, U.S. Red Meat Exports Post Record Gains
Halfway through 2007, U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports gained ground worldwide, while U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports increased in value, but were down slightly in volume.
U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports posted a total increase of 11 percent in volume to 341,928 metric tons (mt) (753.8 million pounds) and a 20 percent increase in value to $1.13 billion through June compared to the same period last year. U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports declined 5 percent in volume to 610,426 mt (1.35 billion pounds), but increased 5 percent in value to $1.47 billion.
In Japan, U.S. beef exports in June were nearly double of prior monthly volumes due to the removal of the 100-percent box inspection requirement. Japan remained the No. 1 market for U.S. pork and pork variety meat in the first half of the year as export volume increased 9 percent to 182,998 mt (403.4 million pounds) and 14 percent in value to $579.7 million compared to the same period last year.
In Mexico, U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports at mid-year have exceeded the pre-BSE level, now at 169,172 mt (373 million pounds), more than double of Canada, the No. 2 market. The Mexico market value of $566 million is a new mid-year record and more than doubles the Canadian market value of $254 million. Mexico is the No. 2 market for U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports.
In China/Hong Kong, exports of U.S. pork and pork variety meat in the first half of the year set new records for the region as volume increased 40 percent to 60,039 mt (132.3 million pounds) and value was up 50 percent to $85 million. China/Hong Kong surpassed South Korea as the fourth largest market for U.S. pork and pork variety meat.
Mid-year records for pork export volume also were set in markets of Oceania (up 27 percent to 21,287 mt/46 million pounds), Central and South America (up 23 percent to 16,098 mt/35 million pounds) and the ASEAN region (up 34 percent to 5,933 mt/13 million pounds).
