U.S. Pork Industry Exports Break Record For 15th Consecutive Year

With the release of the November export statistics by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. pork industry, even without figures from December, has broken the record for U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports for the 15th consecutive year.

In 2005, the U.S. pork industry sold more than $2 billion worth of pork and pork variety meat products to export markets for the second time and exported 1.05 million metric tons in the first 11 months of the year.

As the table below illustrates, in 1991 U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports broke the previous record set in 1989, and every year since the industry has exported more product. Although the value of U.S. pork exports has also increased exponentially, fluctuations in prices mean that the record setting has not been in a consistent line. In 2004, however, the U.S. pork industry’s exports exceeded $2 billion. In 2005 the value of U.S. pork exports will exceed $2.5 billion.

In 1991, the U.S. pork industry set a new record by exporting 181,361 metric tons of pork and pork variety meat for a value of $387 million. The United States now exports more than five times the volume and six times the value of the 1991 record. In 1992, for the first time U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports exceeded 200,000 mt; in 1995 they surpassed 350,000; in 1996, 400,000 mt; in 1998, 500,000 mt. In 2001, U.S. pork exports jumped from the prior year’s 581,497 mt to 702,377. 2004 marked another important milestone as U.S. exports exceed 1 million mt for the first time.

From Jan.-Nov.2005, U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 13 percent higher in volume (1,052,956 mt) compared to the same period of 2004, and 19 percent higher in value at $2.409 billion. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 15 percent higher in volume (326,123 mt) and 13 percent higher in value ($1.008 billion). Although U.S. pork exports to Mexico fell 10 percent in volume to 297,507 mt and 10 percent in value to $459.3 million, 2005 was the greatest year for the U.S. pork industry in Mexico except for 2004. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Mexico have grown from 70,004 mt in 1995 to 361,587 in 2004 and more than 300,000 mt in the whole of 2005.

U.S. pork exports to China and Hong Kong have grown from 31,425 mt in 2000 to 82,238 mt in the first 11 months of 2005. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to South Korea (64,385 mt) in the first 11 months of 2005 already exceed the total of all previous years.

USMEF released a news release on the U.S. pork export success today which can be read online.
