Mexico Leads U.S. Beef Export Markets In First Half Of 2005

Mexico was the No. 1 market for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports in the first half of 2005. U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico totaled 130,540 metric tons (mt), a 132 percent increase on the first half of 2004 due to the closing of the market in the beginning of that year and the restrictions on what products can be exported. The value of U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico climbed 150 percent to $412.7 million. The European Union (20,447 metric tons (mt), valued at $19.5 million) was the second-largest destination for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for the first half of 2005. According to the USDA, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-June 2005 totaled 221,026 mt compared to 110,814 mt in the first half of 2004 (a 99 percent increase) and 629,573 mt in Jan.-June 2003. The value of exports rose 145 percent from $258.3 million to $633.2 million ($1.822 billion in Jan-June 2003).

First Half U.S. Pork Exports Up 17 Percent In Volume, 27 Percent In Value

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 17 percent higher in volume (574,669 mt) in the first half of 2005 compared to the first half of 2004 and 27 percent higher in value at $1.327 billion. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 15 percent higher in volume (185,303 mt) and 14 percent higher in value ($573.9 million). Mexico was the No. 2 market with a 4 percent decrease in volume to 155,094 mt and a 1 percent increase in value to $236.2 million.
