Mexico, European Union, Canada Top U.S. Beef Export Stats

According to the USDA, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-May. 2005 totaled 176,096 metric tons compared with 82,039 metric tons in the prior year, a 115 percent increase. The value rose from $182.6 million to $484.6 million.

U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico totaled 103,330 mt in the first five months of 2005, a 185 percent increase compared to the same period in 2004 since Mexico banned U.S. beef from December 2003 until March 2004. Exports to the European Union were up 4 percent in volume (18,535 metric tons) and 40 percent in value ($17.1 million). U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Canada climbed 359 percent in volume to 15,089 mt and 305 percent in value to $63.0 million.

A detailed breakdown of May 2005 beef export figures is available on the USMEF Web site.

U.S. Pork Exports Continue March To Yet Another Record

The U.S. pork industry is on its way to a 15th consecutive record-breaking year in exports. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 17 percent higher in volume (484,789 mt) in the first five months of 2005 compared to the first five months of 2004 and 29 percent higher in value at $1,120.8 million. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 17 percent higher in volume (156,976 mt) and 17 percent higher in value ($482.8 million) compared to the same period in 2004. These increases are not at the expense of U.S. beef exports. As President & CEO Philip Seng recently pointed out, U.S. pork exports are increasing at a much higher rate in those markets, which are open to U.S. beef.

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Mexico, the No. 2 market, fell by 5 percent compared to last year’s record-breaking pace to 129,926 mt but rose 3 percent in value to $199.8 million.
