U.S. Pork Exports Set New Record For 2004 With October Statistics

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports have already broken the record set in 2003, even though only statistics from the first ten months of 2004 are in. From Jan.-Oct, U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 34 percent higher in volume (819,964 mt) compared to the same period of 2003, and 38 percent higher in value at $1.789 billion. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 12 percent higher in volume (258,663 mt) and 20 percent higher in value ($813.2 million), but Mexico retained the   No. 1 slot in tonnage with a 70 percent increase in volume to 286,114 mt and a 96 percent increase in value to $445.7 million.

U.S. Beef Exports Down 78 Percent Due To BSE Bans

In the first ten months of 2004, the United States exported 243,628 metric tons of beef and beef variety meat worldwide, a drop of 78 percent over the same period in 2003. The value of exports fell 82 percent from $3.262 billion to $602.9 million. More than half of the beef exported so far this year has gone to Mexico. U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico totaled 145,791 mt, a 50 percent decrease on the first ten months of 2003 due to the closing of the market in the beginning of the year and the restrictions on what products can be exported. In October, the United States sent 22,772 mt of beef and beef variety meat to Mexico, 30 percent less than October, 2003. The value of U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico in the first nine months fell 45 percent to $421.5 million. The European Union (38,399 mt, valued at $27.5 million) was the second-largest destination for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-Oct. 2004. U.S. beef variety meat exports to the EU were 238 percent higher (36,701 mt). U.S. beef variety meat exports to Poland, which joined the EU this year, are up 757 percent from 2,651 mt to 22,716 mt this year.
