In First Seven Months, Half Of U.S. Beef Exports Go To Mexico

In the first seven months of 2004, more than half of U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports went to Mexico. U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico totaled 79,351 metric tons (mt), a 60 percent decrease on the first seven months of 2003 due to the closing of the market in the beginning of the year and the restrictions on what products can be exported. The value of U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico fell 55 percent to $229.2 million. The European Union (24,858 metric tons (mt), valued at $17.0 million) was the second-largest destination for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-July 2004. U.S. beef variety meat exports to the EU were 210 percent higher (23,535 mt). According to the USDA, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports worldwide for Jan.-July 2004 totaled only 144,535 mt compared with 752,511 mt in Jan.-July 2003, an 81 percent fall. The value of exports fell 84 percent from $2.197 billion to $343.9 million.

U.S. Pork Exports Still Soaring In Volume And Value

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 32 percent higher in volume (563,432 mt) in the first seven months of 2004 compared to the same period of 2003, and 34 percent higher in value at $1.219 billion. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 6 percent higher in volume (188,318 mt) and 17 percent higher in value ($591.1 million), and Mexico slipped to No. 2 despite a 70 percent increase in volume to 185,102 mt and an 87 percent increase in value to $273.1 million.
