Mexico Leads U.S. Beef Export Markets In First Half Of 2004

Mexico was the No. 1 market for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports in the first half of 2004. U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico totaled 56,288 metric tons (mt), a 65 percent decrease on the first half of 2003 due to the closing of the market in the beginning of the year and the restrictions on what products can be exported. The value of U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports to Mexico fell 60 percent to $164.9 million. The European Union (21,396 metric tons (mt), valued at $14.3 million) was the second-largest destination for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for the first half of 2004, fueled by a 214 percent rise in the export of U.S. beef variety meat. According to the USDA, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-June 2004 totaled only 110,814 mt compared with 629,573 mt in Jan.-June 2003, an 82 percent fall. The value of exports fell 86 percent from $1.822 billion to $258.3 million.

First Half U.S. Pork Exports Up 34 Percent In Volume, 36 Percent In Value

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 34 percent higher in volume (489,936 mt) in the first half of 2004 compared to the first half of 2003, and 36 percent higher in value at $1.043 billion. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 5 percent higher in volume (161,490 mt) and 17 percent higher in value ($501.6 million), but Mexico was the No. 1 market with a 78 percent increase in volume to 162,170 mt and a 92 percent increase in value to $234.8 million.
