Mexico And EU Top Beef Export Markets

Mexico (36,262 metric tons (mt), valued at $108.1 million) was the largest destination for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for the first five months of 2004. The European Union, due to the continuing bans on U.S. beef following the December discovery of a bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case in a Canadian-born cow in Washington State, was the second largest market (17,863 mt, $12.2 million). According to the USDA, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-May 2004 totaled only 82,039 metric tons (mt) compared with 504,939 mt in Jan.-May 2003. The value of exports fell from $1.44 billion to $182.6 million.

U.S. Pork Exports Up 38 Percent In Volume, 37 Percent In Value

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 38 percent higher in volume (412,791 mt) in Jan.-May 2004 compared to Jan.-May 2003, and 37 percent higher in value at $865.6 million. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 8 percent higher in volume (133,917 mt) and 16 percent higher in value ($411.6 million), but Mexico was the No. 1 market with an 85 percent increase in volume to 136,334 mt and a 97 percent increase in value to $193.7 million.
