EU Heads Beef Export Markets
The European Union (10,397 metric tons (mt), valued at $6.7 million) was the largest destination for U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for the first quarter of 2004, due to the continuing bans on U.S. beef following the December discovery of a bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case in a Canadian-born cow in Washington State. According to the USDA, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for Jan.-March 2004 totaled only 31,550 metric tons (mt) compared with 299,981 mt in Jan.-March 2003. The value of exports fell from $837.9 million to $63.9 million.

First Quarter U.S. Pork Exports Up 37 Percent In Volume, 32 Percent In Value
U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 37 percent higher in volume (239,494 mt) in Jan.-March 2004 compared to Jan.-March 2003, and 32 percent higher in value at $488.7 million. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 6 percent higher in volume (75,636 mt) and 12 percent higher in value ($225.8 million), but Mexico was the No. 1 market with a 94 percent increase in volume to 82,751 mt and a 93 percent increase in value to $116.0 million.
