U.S. Beef Exports Plummet In January

The bans on imports of U.S. beef imposed by many countries following the December discovery of a bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case in a Canadian-born cow in Washington State, had a devastating impact on January import figures. According to the USDA, U.S. beef (including variety meat) exports for January 2004 totaled only 6,657 metric tons (mt) compared with 101,439 mt in January 2003. The value fell from $270.7 million in January 2003 to $14.4 million. The No. 1 market was Eastern Europe which bought 1,171 metric tons for $688,000.

January U.S. Pork Exports Increase 26 Percent In Volume, 20 Percent In Value

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports were 26 percent higher in volume (71,513 mt) in January 2004 compared to January 2003, and 20 percent higher in value at $143.3 million. U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Japan were 4 percent lower in volume (21,896 mt) but 1 percent higher in value ($65.4 million) compared to January 2003. 

U.S. pork (including variety meat) exports to Mexico, soared 80 percent in volume, overtaking Japan, to 27,563 mt and 68 percent in value to $36.9 million.
