Trade Agreement Increases Access For U.S. Meat Products

Vietnam on Wednesday (May 31) signed a trade agreement with the United States, paving the way for it to join the World Trade Organization (WTO), which would provide increased access for U.S. meat products.

Under the agreement, Vietnam will immediately allow U.S. bone-in beef and variety meat products from cattle less than 30 months of age. Vietnam has allowed imports of U.S. boneless beef since February 2005.

USMEF has been unable to learn when USDA will post expanded U.S. beef export eligibility information.

“A WTO accession agreement with Vietnam will provide additional access for U.S. beef and pork products,” said USMEF Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific Joel Haggard. “Not only does the agreement expand the range of beef products the United States can export to Vietnam, but it also lowers tariffs on all U.S. meat items.”

Vietnam will lower tariffs on U.S. beef and pork to WTO-bound duty rates of 15 percent or less. Tariffs on U.S. beef and pork variety meat will be reduced to 15 percent and phased down to 8 percent over four years.

Tariffs on U.S. boneless beef will be reduced from 20 percent to 14 percent over five years while U.S. pork tariffs will be reduced by 50 percent over five years, including tariffs on hams and carcasses, which will fall from 30 percent to 15 percent over five years. Rates on U.S. pork processed products will reduce from 20 percent to 10 percent over five years.

Vietnam also said it will allow exports from U.S. beef and pork plants approved by USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service.
