Vietnam Publishes New Tariff List, Higher Tariffs on Beef, Pork, Poultry

Vietnam has published a new list of higher tariffs for certain imports, raising the duty on most imported beef items from 12 percent to 17 percent and the duty on pork from 20 percent to 27 percent. Beef and pork offal items, including tongue and liver, have a new tariff of 13 percent, up from 10 percent.

The poultry import tariffs rise from 12 percent to 40 percent, except for chicken legs, wings and liver which will now be charged 20 percent.

The tariffs take effect on October 12. A list of the tariffs can be read online on www.USMEF.org.

Vietnam’s importance as a market for U.S. exports has grown exponentially this year. In the first seven months of 2008, the U.S. exported 21,215 metric tons of beef (including variety meat), up 590 percent, valued at $58.8 million, and 14,858 metric tons of pork (including variety meat), up from 44 metric tons in the same period of 2007, valued at $26.4 million.
