USMEF’s Huerta Receives Prestigious AMSA International Lectureship Award

Nelson Huerta Leidenz, Ph. D., director of technical services for USMEF-Mexico, has been chosen as this year’s recipient of the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) International Lectureship Award. Dr. Huerta was selected from a list of highly qualified nominees by the planning committee of the 2010 Reciprocal Meat Conference, which will be held June 20-23 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

“Dr. Huerta’s experiences during his career include teaching and research in the university setting, and subsequently the application of meat science in the industrial setting, to help solve problems that affect our society,” said Dr. Robert Delmore, professor of meat science at California Polytechnic State University and chairman of the planning committee. “Through these efforts, Dr. Huerta has enhanced opportunities for companies to engage in international trade and market their products. Our selection committee felt that he embodies the intent of our award, and that he was an excellent choice.”

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this award, but I attribute the selection to the outstanding leadership, vision and support of the U.S. Meat Export Federation,” said Dr. Huerta.

Established in 1992, the AMSA International Award was created to honor an individual for “internationally recognized contributions to the field of meat science and technology, and active leadership and promotion of international activities that foster cooperation and open communication, and the dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of society through meat science and technology.”

Last year the award was renamed the International Lectureship Award, as it now includes an opportunity for Dr. Huerta to share his expertise with the AMSA membership. He will deliver the international lecture for the 2010 Reciprocal Meat Conference.
