USMEF Statement on U.S.-UK Trade Framework

Published: May 09, 2025

On May 8, President Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the framework of a U.S.-United Kingdom trade agreement. More details are available in this summary from USTR and in this White House briefing

USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom thanked the Trump administration for making market access for U.S. red meat a top priority in these negotiations and released this statement:

USMEF is pleased to see access for U.S. beef prioritized in trade negotiations with the United Kingdom. We welcome the creation of a duty-free quota, as U.S. beef has not had duty-free access to the UK since Brexit. However, U.S. beef still faces numerous non-tariff barriers in the UK, and we are hopeful that these will also be addressed. We also see potential for U.S. pork in the British market, and we would like to see the UK remove tariff and non-tariff barriers for pork as well.
