Yakiniku Restaurant Sales Rise 25%

One indicator of recovery in beef consumption in Japan is that yakiniku restaurants did 25 percent more business in November 2002 than in November 2001. Both the number of customers and average spending per customer rose. Sales were less than 10 percent lower than November 2000, the year before the discovery of Japan’s first bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case. Yakiniku is a barbecue dish made with thinly-sliced beef.
