Chilled Pork Inventories High

Japanese distributors now have large inventories of U.S. chilled pork, USMEF-Japan reports, and though 2002 was a great year for U.S. pork exports to Japan (up 7 percent in the latest USDA statistics, Jan.-Oct., 225,791 mt) November imports were hit by the lingering effects of the U.S. West Coast dock dispute, lower domestic prices and the recovery of the Japanese beef market. According to Japanese import figures, Japan imported 25.8 percent less U.S. pork (16,995 mt) than in November 2001, although imports of chilled U.S. pork (11,177 mt) fell less than 8 percent.
