Russia Imports More Meat
Russia imported 33.5 percent more meat in the first nine months of 2002 (785,200 mt) compared with the same period of 2001 (588,100 mt), according to figures released by the Russian Customs Service. Imports came mostly from outside the Former Soviet Union (88.9 percent). Russian processed meat production rose 10.4 percent to 122,000 mt and sausages climbed 19.4 percent to 125,000 mt.
In the same period, Russia imported 2.2 percent more poultry — 1,003,800 mt.
USDA export statistics for the same period record U.S. beef exports (including variety meats) to Russia up 28 percent year on year to 55,354 mt, but U.S. pork exports (including variety meats) to Russia, hit by cheap Brazilian competition, are down 56 percent to 11,842 mt.
