USMEF Showcases U.S. Pork and Beef at Korea’s Largest Food Exhibitions
It’s the height of the trade show season in South Korea, and USMEF is capitalizing on these key opportunities to showcase high-quality U.S. pork and beef.
U.S. products a hit at Seoul Food and Hotel 2009
With a combined track record of more than 20 years, Seoul Food Show and Food and Hotel Korea had become established as two of Korea’s most important trade shows, before they joined forces to become Seoul Food and Hotel 2009, featuring more than 900 exhibitors from 33 countries and attracting more than 35,000 industry visitors.
With support from the Beef Checkoff and Pork Checkoff programs, USMEF-Korea featured a selection of beef and pork items at Seoul Food and Hotel 2009, including dry-aged ribeye and T-bone steak, beef chuck eye roll, bone-in short ribs, finger meat, pork belly and processed pork items.
USMEF also had a special booth for consumers called “U.S. Beef Production at a Glance,” which showed how U.S. cattle are raised, what they are fed, and how they are slaughtered and processed to produce safe and delicious U.S. beef. The booth displayed feed samples used in each stage of cattle production and a “take your picture with cowboys” photo opportunity that was very popular with visitors.

The safety messages obviously resonated with attendees, as Korean consumers stood in long lines to sample U.S. beef and expressed great satisfaction with its flavor and tenderness. Participating companies commented how much consumer attitudes have improved since candlelight demonstrations were held last year in protest of the resumption of U.S. beef imports. Visitors were also extremely pleased with U.S. pork samples, and many inquired as to where these products could be purchased.
Pusan International Food Exhibition now underway
South Korea’s second-largest city is the venue for the Pusan International Food Exhibition, which is being held June 18-21 in Pusan. This trade show is the second-largest in Korea. Annual participation in this show has helped USMEF-Korea build strong relationships with traders, distributors, retailers and food service representatives in the Pusan/Kyungnam region, and provided consumers with an opportunity to become more familiar with U.S. beef and pork.
This year, USMEF-Korea plans to showcase short ribs, boneless short ribs, T-bone steaks, blade meat, finger meat, U.S. pork belly, Boston butt and selected processed pork items at the Pusan event. The trade show is also an ideal venue for USMEF-Korea’s “U.S. Beef Production at a Glance” exhibit.
“In preparation for this event, USMEF mailed out invitations to more than 300 traders, retailers and food service people in the Pusan/Kyungnam region, and we already have a number of meetings prearranged,” said Jihae Yang, USMEF-Korea director. “USMEF has recently received many inquiries about U.S. beef and pork from suppliers who work with Korean barbeque restaurants and retail stores in the region, and we feel this event will deliver some excellent contacts and business opportunities.”
