USMEF Restructures Management Team to Enhance Focus
USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng today announced a restructuring of several key management roles and the addition of a senior-level member to the organization’s international team to bring additional resources to key initiatives.
Seng announced that a new department, Trade Access, has been created that will be under the direction of Senior Vice President Thad Lively. Working with Economist Erin Daley, Lively will focus his resources on developing trade policy positions based on the realities of the international markets. They will work with industry partners to develop and coordinate strategies for resolving trade issues and expanding export opportunities for U.S. red meat.
Joining USMEF-Denver’s staff in the role of assistant vice president, International Marketing, is Greg Hanes, former USMEF-Japan director. Hanes brings experience in the complex and highly valued Japanese export market, having worked on programming involving importers, foodservice, retail and direct-to-consumer initiatives. Hanes will work with USMEF’s international directors to oversee strategic marketing programs and ensure the coordination of public and private funding to maximize the effectiveness of USMEF marketing efforts overseas.
Both Lively, who has worked for USMEF for 10 years, and Hanes, who has served with the organization for nearly 8 years, will report to Seng.
In addition, USMEF-Mexico has added Javier Garcia to the position of retail manager. Mexico is the highest volume destination for both U.S. beef and pork, and the retail sector is a key distribution channel for U.S. products. Garcia comes to USMEF from Soriana, Mexico’s second-largest supermarket chain, where he most recently served as meat purchasing manager. He brings an insider’s perspective to the needs and challenges confronting meat departments in Mexico’s supermarkets, a sector that is growing in size while consolidating the number of its players.
The changes announced today are essentially budget neutral for USMEF. With Hanes’ move to the Denver headquarters, oversight of the experienced team in USMEF’s Tokyo office will be provided by Senior Vice President Asia-Pacific Joel Haggard. Garcia is filling a vacant staff position in the Mexico City office.
“These are moves that play to the strength of our staff members and make us more flexible and responsive as an organization,” said Seng. “These are difficult times for our industry, and these adjustments will help us focus and intensify our efforts. We will continue to evaluate our resources as we look for ways to ensure that USMEF is creating the maximum opportunities for U.S. beef, pork and lamb.”
