New USMEF Chair Encourages Teamwork To Expand U.S. Red Meat Exports
The growth of the U.S. red meat and grain industries is further expansion of world beef and pork supplies since around 95 percent of the world’s population is outside of the United States, newly-appointed USMEF Chair Dan Halstrom said in his first address Wednesday, (Oct. 31), closing the USMEF Strategic Planning Conference in Washington, D.C.
Halstrom, Greeley, Colo., JBS-Swift & Company, assumed the USMEF chair position from Dennis Erpelding, Greenfield, Ind., Elanco Animal Health. He noted industries must be flexible to adapt to changing conditions in order to control their effects. His belief in the value of export markets will serve all USMEF members and industry partners during his year-long term.
USMEF members also elected Chair-elect Jon Caspers, a pork producer, Swaledale, Iowa, Vice Chair Jim Peterson, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Buffalo, Mont. and Secretary/Treasurer Keith Miller, a diversified meat and grain producer, Great Bend, Kan. Sector representatives, At Large directors and retiring directors were recognized for their continued service.
Halstrom plans to continue to the Strategic Planning Process, started two years ago by USMEF Past Chair John Bellinger. Erpelding continued this work during his term and Halstrom continues forward to further its implementation.
USMEF members extended two resolutions, one is to place USDA resources in Asia, Europe/Russia and Asia, and the other is to ensure USTR and USDA provide timely notification of import requirement changes through USMEF. A new resolution was approved, addressing the importance of returning to commercially viable U.S. beef trade.
USMEF members were encouraged to plan now for the next USMEF Board of Directors Meeting and International Buyers conference, May 21-23 in Las Vegas, Nev.
