USMEF Market Expo Destined for Hong Kong, Macau and Manila

Published: Jan 07, 2009

Hong Kong, Macau and Manila are fabled ports of call for tourists and travelers but they are also markets of increasing importance for U.S. beef and pork and the destinations for this year’s USMEF Market Expo, March 21-29, 2009.

Hong Kong, the first stop on the itinerary, is a famously cosmopolitan city that now boasts one of the highest per capita consumption rates for U.S. beef and pork. From there the tour goes to Macau, a Portuguese colonial outpost now back in Chinese hands and positioning itself as Asia's answer to Las Vegas. As its tourism increases, Macau will need greater volumes of high-quality beef and pork. From Macau, the USMEF Market Expo team will cross the border and visit the dynamic Pearl River Delta region, the wealthiest part of China and a logistical gateway for beef and pork imports. China became a major player in the world pork market in 2008, and the USMEF Market Expo will explore China’s future impact on the global pork market.

Expo participants then fly to Manila, capital of the Philippines, one of the most competitive meat import markets in which U.S. beef and pork products face competition ranging from French pork to Indian buffalo meat. The team will see meat consumption patterns that are more Latin than Asian, including an almost unparalleled penchant for processed meats and how the domestic livestock industry copes with the increasing volatility in world markets. In Manila, the team will witness USMEF in action by participating in a USMEF educational session for the local meat trade, building interest and loyalty in U.S. beef and pork in our largest red meat export market in Southeast Asia.

A registration brochure is online and the final deadline for registration is Friday, Feb. 13. Members with questions concerning the USMEF Market Expo can contact Jackie Boubin, director of meeting services, at (303) 623-6328 or jboubin@usmef.org.
