Tariff Hike Halts Offal Trade
A recent action by the government of Colombia has brought to a halt trade in U.S. tripe, stomachs and livers valued at $1.7 million, according to the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). Colombia increased the tariff on imports of beef and beef offal from 20 to 80 percent from May 21, 2003. The government also implemented a 3,000 metric ton tariff-rate quota for high-quality beef (the in-quota tariff is 20 percent). Imports of beef and beef offal also now require prior authorization by the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture.
