Russia Imports More Meat

Russia imported 32.3 percent more meat in 2002 (1,110,200 mt) compared with 2001, according to figures released by the Russian Customs Service.  Imports came mostly from outside the Former Soviet Union (87.8 percent). According to the USDA, the U.S. exported 71,494 mt of beef and beef variety meat (an 18 percent increase) and 15,891 mt of pork and pork variety meat (a 53 percent decrease).

In 2002, Russia imported 1.1 percent less poultry meat — 1,374,900 mt than in 2001.
