New Opportunities For U.S. Meat In Colombia

On Feb. 27, 2006, the United States and Colombia concluded free trade negotiations, and on Nov. 22 the United States-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement (CTPA) was signed. The results were very positive for both the U.S. pork and beef industries since the agreement will result in reductions in tariffs on U.S. meat imported into Colombia.

In the latest USMEF Insight, Central and South America Director Ricardo Vernazza-Paganini examines opportunities for U.S. red meat in Colombia, the third-most populous country in Latin America with a population of 43 million. Colombia also has a long history of sound macroeconomic policies and, unlike many Latin American countries, has never suffered any dramatic economic crises or periods of hyperinflation.
