USMEF Hosts Media Team from Japan

Four representatives from Japanese consumer and trade publications are getting a firsthand look at U.S. beef and pork production this week at a tour hosted by USMEF. The week began Monday with an overview of USMEF programs by President and CEO Philip Seng and senior USMEF staff. Later in the day, the group toured a wide variety of retail outlets in the Denver area, including large supermarkets as well as specialty meat shops.

“Perhaps more than any other overseas market, the attitude of the Japanese media toward U.S. beef and pork can have a tremendous impact on U.S. producers’ bottom line,” Seng said. “That’s why we embrace these opportunities to educate reporters and editors about the quality of our products and the integrity of our production and processing methods.”

On Tuesday the tour focused on cattle ranching as the team visited Spruce Mountain Ranch near Larkspur, Colo., and Running Creek Ranch near Elizabeth, Colo. Spruce Mountain Ranch specializes in purebred Angus seedstock, while Running Creek Ranch is a purebred Limousin operation. The group observed the ranches’ production methods as well as their source verification and traceability practices.

The following day was spent in Fort Collins, Colo., touring Colorado State University’s diagnostic laboratory and veterinary teaching hospital, as well as the CSU Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center.

Thursday the team’s itinerary will focus on cattle feeding and processing as the reporters tour the Five Rivers Cattle Feeding operation near Kersey, Colo., and the JBS beef plant in Greeley. In Greeley, the group will also receive an overview of Colorado’s pork industry from the Colorado Pork Producers Council. The tour concludes Friday with a further discussion of livestock source verification and traceability with IMI Global and a visit to the Denver office of Japan’s Consulate General.
