USMEF Finds Opportunity In Malaysia

USMEF is participating this week in Malaysia’s biennial Food & Hotel Malaysia 2007 trade show.

The four-day show (August 22-25) attracts more than 20,000 foodservice, hospitality and retail key decision makers. Some 600 companies from 32 countries across the region participated in the event. Situated in the USA pavilion, USMEF participates to interact with the trade directly and to gain feedback regarding our products and marketing activities.

Currently only one Halal plant in United States is approved for export to Malaysia; however, several importers and distributors visiting the USMEF booth expressed interest in importing U.S. beef.

In addition, USMEF also provided information on U.S. pork. Malaysia has been importing processed pork like sausages, ham and bacon regularly and there also is a sizable market for U.S. pork offal in the country.

The ASEAN region posted a 224 percent increase in the volume of U.S. beef and variety meat imported during the first six months of this year, while value rose 164 percent. Pork and pork variety meat exports to the region also are up 34 percent in volume and 50 percent in value.
