USMEF Event Pairs ASEAN Buyers with U.S. Packers, Traders, Exporters
The ASEAN region has emerged as a major destination for U.S. pork and beef exports and captured the interest of a growing number of U.S. suppliers. Last week, USMEF brought U.S. and ASEAN business contacts together for a “Meet the Buyers” conference in Denver.
U.S. processors, traders and exporters saw the conference as a valuable opportunity to make business connections in a heavily populated region that holds great growth potential for U.S. exports. Buyers, importers and distributors from the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam had the opportunity to meet face-to-face with these suppliers to discuss their product needs and share information about their markets.

Prior to the Denver event, participants from the ASEAN region toured Cargill’s beef processing plant in Dodge City, Kan., the National Beef processing plant in Liberal, Kan., the Seaboard Foods pork plant in Guymon, Okla., and the JBS beef plant in Greeley, Colo.
“I’m very excited because this is my first opportunity to go to U.S. beef and pork slaughterhouses and to meet new suppliers from the U.S.A.,” said Imelda Ventus, purchasing manager for DOP Philippines, Inc. “We would really like to explore more business from the United States. Currently, we are only buying a small amount of U.S. product from a trader, but we would like to go direct.”

Craig Rempp, vice president of sales and marketing for LPB, Inc. in Earlham, Iowa, also found the event to be an exceptionally valuable opportunity. Founded in 2001, LPB is a family-owned custom pork processor that is looking to further expand its international presence and to deal more directly with its clientele in the ASEAN region.
“Our intent here is to make sure (the buyers) understand who LPB is,” Rempp said. “We have shipped into Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines, but a lot of times they don’t connect the faces with the name. So we want to get in front of the buyers so they see LPB as a very viable company. When they see an LPB box, we want them to really know who we are.
“This event actually serves LPB very well in two ways,” he continued. “It allows us to meet face-to-face with some of the U.S. traders we have dealt with, but also to meet directly with overseas buyers. It’s absolutely been two-fold good news for us.”
The Meet the Buyers event and pre-conference tours were made possible through funding from the Beef Checkoff and Pork Checkoff programs.
