USMEF Efforts Educate ASEAN Importers and Consumers

Several current and recent market development activities have helped improve understanding of U.S. red meat products in ASEAN countries and increased opportunities for U.S. meat exports there.

For example, 10 meat importers from ASEAN countries are now in the United States to better understand the U.S. pork industry. Leading the team for the week-long trip is USMEF Regional Chef Sabrina Yin.

The trip began Oct. 20, with the team visiting pork packing plants and further processing plants and supermarkets to see how U.S. meat is displayed and merchandised. Team members represent companies interested in both foodservice and retail pork; in manufacturing grade pork cuts and offal. Several are also looking for U.S. processed pork such as ham, sausages, bacon and deli meats.

Meanwhile, a promotion is assuring Malaysian consumers that U.S. pork is safe. The USMEF-backed supermarket promotion started in mid-September and includes taste samplings on a rotation basis in the five outlets of Isetan Supermarket, Cold Storage Supermarket and Jusco Supermarket. This promotion will run through November.

U.S. processed pork, such as sausages, ham, bacon and luncheon meats, is currently imported into Malaysia, along with U.S. pork offal like pork stomach and livers. Although the majority of Malaysians are Muslim, the small number of ethnic Chinese are wealthy and recognize the high quality of U.S. pork products.
