USMEF Chairman Addresses Missouri, Kansas Corn Producers
USMEF Chairman Jon Caspers is in Branson, Mo., today to address a joint meeting of the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council, the Missouri Corn Growers Association, the Kansas Corn Commission and the Kansas Corn Growers Association.
Caspers, a hog producer from Swaledale, Iowa, says the corn industry is a critical supporter of USMEF, and it is important to keep producers informed about how their checkoff dollars are used to promote beef and pork exports.
USMEF Chairman Jon Caspers
“I always appreciate the opportunity to speak with corn producers about the importance of beef and pork exports,” Caspers said. “Meat exports are a great way to utilize corn in a value-added way and to create a positive return for everyone involved. USMEF is very fortunate to have forward-thinking partners in the corn and soybean industries who embrace this philosophy and are willing to invest in overseas marketing.”
Bison EV Program Needed for European Union
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has revised its export requirements for the European Union. While U.S. BSE regulations do not apply to bison, the EU applies the same specified risk material (SRM) requirements to bison as it does to cattle. Therefore, bison meat exported to the EU must be produced under an approved AMS export verification program. Bison slaughtered for export to the EU on or after November 1, 2009, must comply with this requirement.
Desk and on-site audits are required for approval in the ARC 1030C EV Program for Canada and EU. Please make the necessary changes to your manual and submit to ARCBranch@ams.usda.gov for review.
The Official Listing of Eligible Suppliers to USDA Bovine EV Programs will be updated soon to include the bison EV program. Members should consult the FSIS export website to comply with requirements for exports to the European Union.
ARC 1040 Updated
The ARC 1040 Work Instruction, Verification for EU High-Quality Beef has been updated to include information addressing the verification of feeding practices and rations. This document can be accessed on the Livestock Feeding Claims Audit Program Web site at www.ams.usda.gov/livestockfeedingclaimsauditprogram.
Members with questions should call USMEF’s Export Services Department at 303-623-6328.
