Japan's Beef Imports Continue Recovery

In March, Japan imported 56,610 metric tons (mt) of beef, 36 percent more than March 2002, according to Japanese government statistics. The U.S. provided 24,747 mt of the total, Australia, 28,401 mt. Imports of U.S. product were 7.2 percent higher than March 2002, and U.S. chilled beef imports were 26.9 percent higher at 9,261 mt. Japan's January inventory was 100,509 mt, 32.1 percent down from a year earlier.

Japan's Pork Imports Continue Fall In March

In March, Japan imported 33,214 metric tons (mt) of pork, 30.9 percent less than March 2002, according to Japanese government statistics. The U.S. provided 13,892 mt of the total, Canada, 7,447 mt and Denmark, 6,116 mt. Imports of U.S. product were 3.9 percent lower than March 2002, and U.S. chilled pork imports were 14.0 percent lower at 8,588 mt. Japan's January pork inventory was 155,479 mt, 2.6 percent up from a year earlier.

Imports of U.S. product were 3.9 percent lower than March 2002, and U.S. chilled pork imports were 14.0 percent lower at 8,588 mt. Japan’s January pork inventory was 155,479 mt, 2.6 percent up from a year earlier.
