Climb 41 Percent in 2002
U.S. beef liver exports to Russia in 2002 increased 41 percent over 2001 levels to 78,266 metric tons (mt), according to Russian government statistics reported last month. The U.S. expanded its dominance last year to 85 percent of all beef liver imported by Russia, up from an 80 percent market share of total Russian beef liver imports in 2001.
Australia and Canada were a distant second and third last year, respectively, regarding market share of total Russian beef liver imports. Their 2002 market shares combined for less than 14 percent of all Russian beef liver imports last year, with the remainder of Russian imports coming from Denmark and New Zealand. Russian demand for beef liver continues to grow, as Russia reported a 34 percent increase in total beef liver imports for 2002 over 2001 levels to 92,196 mt.
